sv orion 1

Orion1 is an Amel Maramu. She is a 46foot ketch with a draft of 2 metres. She was built in1979 and is hull number 42 (the meaning of life for all you hitch hikers guide fans!)We bought her in 2007 after a lot of hmmming and ahhhhing. She sailed into Paleros along side us and John was admiring her when the German owner came out and John got talking to him and he said 'you can buy her if you want'. John phoned me at work and told me he had found the yacht for us to do our blue water sailing in. The problem was we already had a yacht and the thought of owning two was a bit scary! I went to see her that summer and Doris and Rainer the owners showed us all around the yacht. My resolve was weakening... And when they saw us off the yacht Doris played 'you can get it if you really want it' by Jimmy Cliff and that was it .. Orion was sold!
We have done an awful lot of work on her.
Changed all the windows, hatches and windscreens
Replaced electrical equipment and installed AIS and a forward seeking sonar
Re upholstered
Replaced all the head linings... A pig of a job!
Replaced the fridge
Bought a sea anchor .... Never leave home without one!
Purchased a new tender ... A portabote
Anti fouled her with copper coat
Painted the decks
And this just what I can remember... Most recently she has had all the running rigging and standing rigging on the Main replaced.
There is always something that needs to be replaced or updated... But you can't take it with you!

This is our home and she is a solid home that has never let us down in some pretty awful weather.
She has a double stern cabin with heads and a cabin in the bow that can take two single. There is also heads in the bow. We have sleeping accommodation in the main saloon as well.
The centre cockpit means you feel very safe in heavy seas.
